Understanding the deregulation of tumor suppressor genes in cancer provide the foundation for recent diagnostic and prognostic methods.The Lats1 tumor suppressor gene codes for a serine/threonine kinase that plays a role in the progression through mitosis.Lats 1 deficiency in Drosophila melangaster causes either lethality or cell proliferation.In mice, lats1-/-posses defects as infertility, affected growth of mammary glands, ovarian tumor, sarcoma in soft tissues,and finally impaired pituitary function.In humans, loss of heterozygosity of the chromosomal region of LATS1 has been documented in ovarian, cervical, and breast tumors.Additionally, point mutations in LATS 1 have been found in human sarcomas.
