Dam construction is one of the main factors to change sediment dynamics which in turn possiblycause river degradation or aggradation downstream. The main objective of this work is toexamine the downstream sediment budget,as affected by the dams constructed at the upperstream of the lower reach of Red River. The results show that the annual sediment load along thelower reach of the Red River at Son Tay has slightly declined from 121 Mt/yr to 114 Mt/yr afterthe construction of the first dam (Thac Ba reservoir) in the tributary of the Lo River (upper SonTay) in 1972.
