Reliable synthetic routes accessing to both imidazole (1) and imidazoline (2) derivatives containing carbohydrate unit have been developed.Based on 1 and 2 as key intermediates, a series of NHCs (N-heterocyclic carbenes) precursors (3 and 4) have been afforded.Some of the NHC precursors have been demonstrated as NHC ligand for transition metal complexes.
