Background and purpose: Oxidative stress with high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.Reduced glutathione (GSH) is a cytosolic antioxidant to reduce cellular ROS levels.Glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) is the rate-limiting enzyme regulating cellular GSH production.Several studies have demonstrated the importance of GCL in the development of atherosclerosis.Macrophage CD36 uptakes oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) thereby facilitating foam cell formation.
