  In recent years, ruthenium(Ⅱ) polypyridyl complexes have been attracting intensive interests due to their applications in nanocrystalline TiO2-based solar cells and biosensors.More recently, novel sensitizers with an increased optical cross section allowing thinner TiO2 films and nonvolatile electrolytes have been employed.For example,Gr(a)tzel et al have reported the amphiphilic sensitizer [Ru(4, 4-dicarboxylic acid-2,2-bipyridine)(4, 4-bis(p-hexyloxystyryl)-2,2-bipyridine)(NCS)2], coded as K-19, which not only increases the extinction coefficient of the sensitizer by extending the π-conjugation of the ligand but also augments its hydrophobicity, preventing dye desorption by water and stabilizing device performance under long-term light soaking and thermal stress.
