Our knowledge of adipose tissue has changed from an inert energy storage tissue to an active endocrine organ, which communicates with central and peripheral organs through the synthesis and secretion of a number of molecules. These adipokines molecules potentially fulfill the role of biomarkers and biosensors. For example the production and secretion of adipokines may play a role in sensing nutrients and therefore measurement of these can increase our understanding of the metabolic homeostasis of the system. We also know that different nutrients provoke different hormonal responses, and those hormonal responses determine how much fat is accumulated, although limited evidence of this exists in children.
