Although osteoporosis is often considered a disease primarily affecting females, within the past two decades it has become apparent that osteoporosis is not solely a female disease. It affects an estimated 2 million men in the United States. It is also accounts for most of the hip fracture in the elderly individuals.Up to 20% of patients who sustain hip fractures died within the first 12 months from related complications. The mortality rate during the first year after hip fracture was greater than 30% for men compared to 17% for women. This presentation will focus on the importance of osteoporosis screening and the existingscreening gender bias.It will help clinicians appropriately choose the medication that was well studied in males, which not only increases the bone density but rather has a good outcome data in preventing future fracture. The presentation will also address the impact of gender difference on the survival of osteoporotic individuals treated with bisphosphonate.
