A herpesvirus is composed of a viral genomic DNA-containing capsid surrounded by an amorphous protein layer referred to as tegument, and enclosed in a lipid envelope derived in part from the cell membrane.Although the proteins in tegument layer, connecting the capsid and envelope, are crucial components of virion structure, their functions on virion assembly/egress remain elusive.
