The delivery of photosensitizers (PS) for the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer may benefit from the proper choice of a carrier system that allows controlled release of the PS at the target tissue after intravenous administration. The biodistribution and efficacy of the PS can be improved and adverse side effects such as skin toxicity diminished.Polymer micelles are drug carriers that can be fine-taned such that the drug (in this case the PS) is stably incorporated during the circulation in the blood stream, by which it becomes possible to make use of passive or active targeting strategies (van Nostrum et al.2004, Carstens et al.2007).
