Content: Starved M.xanthus cells glide to aggregation centers and form fruiting bodies in which some of the cells differentiate into spores; however, the majority of cells lyse, and others remain outside fruiting bodies as peripheral rods.Short-range C-signaling coordinates cell movements and governs cell fates.Several C-signal-dependent genes have been shown to be under combinatorial control of two transcription factors, MrpC and FruA.The two proteins bind cooperatively in promoter regions.Different arrangements of binding sites with different affinities influence the timing of promoter activity and its dependence on C-signaling, since the activity of FruA is somehow regulated by C-signaling.
