Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), such as cryopreservation, are commonly used to manage mouse colonies.More recently these technologies are being used to facilitate the creation of genetically modified animals.Cryopreservation has been used to facilitate the archiving and distribution of mouse colonies since the 1970s, but is now being applied specifically to facilitating the creation of genetically modified animals. For example, challenges with coordinating ES cell cultures with embryo production can make it difficult to complete projects as planned.
