Like any organization working with large amounts of data, research laboratories can benefit greatly from using computer software to help automate otherwise manual processes. However, because each laboratory is unique as well as highly specialized, finding helpful, "off the shelf" computer software is problematic. In this talk, the many options available to lab managers will be discussed.Topics will include the pros and cons of buying "off the shelf" versus customer developed applications;using database-oriented application development tools versus a traditional programming language-based software development approach;pros and cons of popular application platforms;do it yourself versus hiring a professional;and options for getting customer software developed.
