We have developed a laser rapid prototyping method for the construction of microchannels in nickel chips.As a practical application,a microreactor for the direct fluorination of organic substrates via microbubbles has been realized.In addition,a modular compressive chip packaging method was developed for safe reactor sealing without permanent chip-to-chip bonding,allowing single chips with open microchannels to be installed,sealed,and after testing,easily replaced.The method also allows channel fabrication in other substrates as well,such as silicon,which has also been used in micoreactor chips.Fluorine gas is introduced into the microchannel via micromachined nozzles,generating a monodisperse chain of bubbles.The fluorination takes place on the gas/liquid interface of each bubble while traveling along the channel.
