Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) widely occur in plants.Yearly, the intake of PA-containing medicinal herbs and PA-contaminated foodstuffs causes numerous cases of liver injury worldwide.In the recent years, hepatotoxicity-induced by natural products, particularly medicinal herbs and dietary supplements, attracts more public concern, because it is considered as one of the major contributors to the drug-induced liver injury (DILI), one of the leading causes of acute liver failure Worldwide.In China, it has been reported that herbal hepatotoxicity counts for about 30-40％ of DILI, and PA-induced liver injury may be one of the major causes.However, the diagnosis of herbal hepatotoxicity is challenging due to the lack of characteristic clinical features and specific diagnostic methods.
