Deep hole drilling, up to 500 times of hole diameter, has particular relevance to the manufacture of control rod drive mechanisms for nuclear applications.The long-span slender cutting tool introduces numerous structural mechanics and dynamics problems, including extremely low flexural stiffness and stability, significant time-varying torsional and gyroscopic whirling (spiraling) vibration in its stationary and rotary conditions.
