Hyriopsis schlegelii is one of the most important freshwater pearl mussels in China. There is no mass mortality occurred until now, therefore,a good understanding of the defense mechanisms in the bivalve species may be conducive to practical approaches to control probable diseases and to avoid mass mortalities. The age-related changes in the phagocytic activity of haemocytes, the antibacterial and hydrolytic enzymes (acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and catalase activities) of both haemocytes and haemolymph were studied in H.schlegelii.There was significant difference of phagocytosis ratio against four strains of bacteria (Escherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureus,Bacillus subtilis and Aeromonas hydrophila) in the same age mussels (p<0.05).Phagocytosis ratio against A.hydrophila was the highest and in 1-4 year-old it was 42.58±3.33%,44.91±3.96%,49.57±5.75% and 45.37±4.07%,respectively.Phagocytosis ratio and phagocytosis index against (to) the same strains of bacteria reached the highest in 3-year-old mussels, but there was no significant difference of phagocytosis ratio or phagocytosis index against (to) the same strain of bacteria in 1-4 year-old groups (p>0.05).
