Pulmonary artery catheter thermodilution has been the standard in cardiac output monitoring since the 1970s.However, its clinical use has declined in recent years because of the risks associated with its use and a failure to show that its use improves outcome in critically ill patients.Alternative, less invasive, methods of cardiac output monitoring have been developed, such as Doppler ultrasound and arterial pressure wave pulse contour.So far, none of these methods has been shown to be any better than thermodilution in terms of their accuracy and reliability.
