Pathologic and angioscopic studies have demonstrated that plaque rupture into the vessel lumen may lead to the formation of thrombus and acute coronary syndromes.Evaluation of the tissue characteristics of coronary plaques is very important to understand the process of ACS and prevent it, because stability of atherosclerotic plaques is related to histological composition.We developed an on-line integrated backscatter (IB) intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging system for tissue characterization of coronary plaques.The use of the appropriate IB cutoff points for discriminating lipid pool, fibrosis and calcification resulted in tissue characterization with a high diagnostic accuracy.The IB-IVUS is promising method for analysis of tissue characteristics of coronary plaques.
