Introduction: Hypoxic environment and expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) exist in inflamed synovium of patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA), and contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease.High molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA) is widely used in the treatment of OA by intra-articular injection for lubrication and cartilage protection.However, the role of HMWHA on the therapy is still unknown, and we hypothesize that the mechanism is through regulating the expression of the lubricin (Proteoglycan 4, PRG4), hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2) and VEGF.
