Currently,approx.95% of steel are produced by means of continuous casting,and the trend is rising,commonly using continuous slab casters and CSP(E) plants.In the field of conventional continuous casting there are two major trends.In Europe,production has been focusing on higher quality grades.Here,the material of the slabs is at the center of attention,e.g.higher-strength and other quality steel grades.In Asia,on the other hand,there is a trend towards increased output volumes and therefore higher casting speeds.These two trends result in very different requirements placed on the casters.This publication deals with “High Speed Casting” for continuous slab casters,which means conventional slab casting with high casting speeds.For this,construction details have to be considered as well as the metallurgical conditions.Tried and tested measures,for example electromagnetic brakes and stirrers,are assessed with regard to their influence on high speed casting.New developments such as the HD mold and the STEC-Roll(R) are explained and examined with regard to their use in high speed casting plants.By example of selected reference plants,the effectiveness of the technologies developed by SMS Siemag is proven.Based on these new developments and the well-proven technical expertise,a High Speed Casting 3.0 continuous slab caster is designed,with a casting speed of up to 3.0 m/min.
