  Cereal research has shown that whole grain can provide functional healthy benefit to reduce risks of various types of chronic diseases.Further studies indicated whole grain phytochemicals especially abundant phenolic acids existing in cereal bran attribute the most part of high antioxidant property.Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxy cinnamic acid) which is the most abundant phenolic acids in cereal bran especially in corn and wheat bran (up to 1 ‰) may offer beneficial effects against cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimers disease.However, more than >97% of ferulic acid in cereal bran is bound with hemicellulose and arabinoxylan in cell wall, which led to its low bioavailability and underestimation during past long time.The alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis has been reported to be effective to release the bound phenolics from cereal bran.Ferulic acid exists in transand cis-two isomers in natural resource with very different physical properties, white crystal for trans-ferulic acid, while yellow oil for cis-ferulic acid, and the trans-can be transform into the cis-under UV irradiation or high temperature.However, few literature has reported the difference of their biological function due to the separation difficulties.
