Oxygen concentrations of around 1 kPa and lower are applied in storage protocols such as ILOS, ULO and, more recently, Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere (DCA) with benefits in terms of quality maintenance, delay of ripening and senescence, and prolonging commercial life of several apple cultivars.Since these low oxygen concentrations are very close to the anaerobic compensation point the risk of severe quality losses due to the anaerobic metabolism (e.g.fermentation) and the onset of disorder is high.
