This document provides information and instructions for preparing an abstract (or the full-length paper) for the International Conference on Science and Technology of Heterogeneous Materials and Structures (11-13 October, 2013 in Wuhan University, China). In this paper, failure mechanism of sedimentary rocks under biaxial compression is numerically analyzed using an improved rigid block spring method (RBSM).In the improved RBSM, a random Voronoi diagram is adopted as the basic mesh for simulation and the bedding planes are explicitly represented (Figure t).A simple failure criterion, which combines the Mohr-Coulomb criterion with tension strength, is used to account for both Mode Ⅰ and Mode Ⅱ fracturing along the interfaces between blocks, as is shown in Figure 2.The bedding planes are treated in the same manner as interfaces between the rock blocks, but with different meso-scopic mechanical coefficients. The effects of the mechanical coefficients of the bedding planes on the macro failure strength of samples are analyzed at different loading orientations. An interesting phenomenon is observed that when coefficients of the bedding planes are chosen as the same as which of rock matrix, anisotropy in elastic deformation and peak strength still exists. It seems that anisotropy can be mainly induced by bedding planes.
