  As a powerful technique, gradient elution, such as temperature gradient elution in GC and solvent gradient elution in LC, plays important roles in chromatography.For samples with complicated composition, gradient elution can improve the resolution and meanwhile shorten the separation time when appropriate conditions are selected.Flow-rate gradient elution is a rarely employed mode in practical use, though it has been seldom reported in literature.By sheer chance we experimentally observed that ultrahigh peak efficiency is generated by flow rate gradient elution, particularly in a slow/fast step-wise mode.Peak efficiency as high as 940 000 plates was observed for a 25 cm long column under step-wise flow-rate gradient elution.As compared with isocratic elution, the slow/fast step-wise flow-rate gradient elution provides significant improvement in peak efficiency and resolution, which makes this phenomenon very attractive in both theory and application.
