Latex coagulation is common practice in the industrial field, especially in polymer companies. In the polymer processes, the coagulation step is of primary importance as it defines the size and the shape of the final product.Conventionally, coagulation is performed in stirred tanks.Since coagulation is influenced by the shear rate, safety and quality issues can arise from the use of stirred tanks because they induce wide shear rate distributions [1].An alternative is the use of milli-scale continuous devices.Because of the small characteristic dimensions of such equipment and the low mean velocity required to ensure sufficient residence time, these reactors usually work under laminar flow conditions. The laminar velocity profile was found to generate a specific collision mechanism for aggregation, leading to interesting aggregate shape properties compared with conventional batch processes [2]; however the non-homogeneity of shear rate profiles is suspected to lead to broad particle size distribution.
