For decades the workhorse of computational solid state and surface materials science has been Density Functional Theory (DFT).Despite their impressive successes, state-of-the-art density functionals shows several shortcomings (e.g.poor description of electronic excitations, severe underestimation of transition state energies, neglect of van-der-Waals interactions) that have proven difficult to address within the framework of DFT.
