Background: Suicide is a public health problem among developing and developed countries.In Iran the Mental Health Bureau designed a national strategy which the main purpose was to integrate the suicide prevention program into PHC.The aim of this research study was to implement the strategy in one of the western province of Iran with moderate to high rate of suicide.Methods: This study has been launched in Nahavand, in Hamedan province from OCT 2009 and will be finished at the end of April of 2011.The rate of committed suicide in the preceding year of implementing this study was 22 per 100000.During the first 6-month of study the following capacities were built: providing educational manuals, staff training, organizing and updating registration system for suicidal behaviours, referral systems and forms among the four levels of PHC, establishing consulting office for suicide attempters, providing methadone maintenance treatment services for suicidal addicted individuals were provided.The 12-month intervention period was conducted since April 2010 to 2011.A screening tool to identify depressed and suicidal individuals has been created for active screening of the rural and urban dwellers.Results: The method of implementation of the study shows that integration of the suicide prevention program into PHC is feasible.Waterfall training method had significant effect to improve the knowledge and skills of health staffs of different level of PHC.653 suicide attempters and their family received the 5-session consultation so far.The rate of committed suicide showed a 15% reduction in the first year of intervention but the main results will be presented and discussed after finishing the study in the 26th international congress of IASP.
