A new flocculation tester was developed, by attaching a photo-coupler and switch timer to the conventional jar tester.By repeating the ON-OFF of the mixer switch intermittently, flocculation rate process was investigated.During the each period of stop mixing, the settling velocity of flocculated particles is measured by the light transmission method and also the solid concentration of the supematant is obtained.This new tester allows measuring several flocculation phenomena such as, floc growth speed, two-stage growth of floc, breakage and re-flocculation.Using this tester, the flocculation process was investigated by changing the conditions, i.e., flocculant dose and mixing intensity.The results confirmed that this new tester is a very useful tool for the analysis of the floccutation process.
