The cellulosic biomass has recently been recognized as renewable, non-edible feedstock for energy production such as liquid biofuels. For bioproduction of ethanol by fermentation, cellulose should ultimately be fermentable, thus enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose has been focused on because enzymatic saccharificafion is advartageous due to high catalytic efficiency under mild reaction conditions compared with other technologies.Ionic liquids (IL) have been recognized as potential solvents for cellulose pretreatments, which increase the rate of enzymatic saccharification. We have investigated a one-batch process of enzymatic saccharification of cellulose without recovering regenerated cellulose from the pretreatment solution. Here we report the present enzymatic in situ saccharification (EISS) process can be constructed with a variety of cellulose-dissolving ILs.
