A bench-scale plant that uses water and CO2 to recycle concrete sludge has been designed, constructed and operated. The influences of operating conditions on Ca extraction and the subsequent CaCO3 precipitation reaction wcre investigated.Calcite type CaCO3 particles with high-purity (>99 wt %) were produced from actual concrete sludge. The particle sizes of the CaCO3 produced were distributed over 3-30 μm (volume based), with a peak at about 10 μm.An overall reduction in CO2 emissions was estimated from the power consumption and amount of CO2 consumed in CaCO3 precipitation.Important knowledge for design and construction of a pilot-scale plant was obtained from the operation of the bench-scale plant.
