Neurons develop extensive axonal and dendritic arbors and form numerous synapses.Using heterochronic coculture method,we studied the sequential events of the pre-and postsynaptic maturation.Our data showed that functional synapses could be formed between young and old neurons within 24 h in culture system.By using GAD-GFP mice,we found that in GABAergic synapses,the number of new neurons that function as postsynaptic parters is much more that new neurons act as presynaptic parters.Taken together,our results suggest that the postsynaptic components of GABAergic synapses maturate earlier than presynaptic ones.The sequential development of inhibitory and excitatory synapses may play important role in the circuit formation.
