Mutations in matrilin-3 have been associated with common skeletal diseases like Hand Osteoarthritis (HOA) as well as with the rare chondrodysplasias such as multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) and spondylo-epi-metaphyseal dysplasia (SEMD).However, dedifferentiated chondrocytes of the third passage did not express it at all. Therefore, matrilin-3 might serve as a marker for the differentiation state of chondrocytes. These findings suggest that tight regulation of matrilin-3 expression is essential for maintenance of the cartilage ECM microenvironment.
