The effect of an iron addition on the microbial cycling of the climate-active gas dimethylsulfide (DMS) and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) was tested during SEEDS II (Subarctic Pacific Iron Experiment for Ecosystem Dynamics Study) from July 19 to August 21 2004 aboard the R/V Hakuho-Maru.The study area which lies in the Northwest Pacific Ocean (48oN 165oE) was enriched with Fe and SF 6,a conservative tracer allowing the tracking of the fertilized patch.Microbial DMSP cycling rates were determined in the surface mixed layer during incubations using 35 S-DMSP techniques.
