Recent evidence suggests that Saharan dust is an important source of nutrients to the surface Atlantic Ocean,stimulating both nitrogen fixation and primary production.This has been attributed to increased iron and phosphate supply in the case of nitrogen fixation,and inorganic nitrogen supply in the case of primary production.However,other deckboard manipulation incubations,and in situ releases,of iron and phosphate in the Atlantic and Mediterranean have not observed an increase in either nitrogen fixation or community primary production,and so it appears that the response to increased iron and phosphate availability may be dependent upon other factors.
