南海的热带藻类资源繁多、形态多样,但是长期以来,由于缺乏对南海藻类资源的深入调查研究,导致对我国南海海域蕴藏的藻类资源本底不清;在南海藻类的利用方面,由于缺乏统一管理及技术指导,部分海域的自然海藻资源过度采收、且缺乏有效保护,导致海藻资源物种多样性不断遭到破坏甚至丧失.
