Neuronal Calcium Sensor (NCS) proteins comprise a family of proteins that determine response to calcium fluctuations.Their role in normal physiological functions such as photo/visual transduction and memory are well established; their altered function in disease processes, especially neurodegenerative disorders, is currently gaining importance.Research in our laboratory has established a role for NCS proteins in circadian rhythms.Interestingly, the same proteins are also apparently involved in the onset and progression of Alzheimers Discase.Recent research supports a link between circadian rhythms and Alzheimers Disease.The functions of the NCS proteins in the context of this link and their potential role in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimers Disease is an attractive and emerging concept.
