Introduction: Sedative/hypnotics are commonly administered to obese patients with sleep disordered breathing in an effort to consolidate their sleep (Sleep 34: 869, 2011).This prescribing pattern is complicated by the fact that obese patients have an increased risk of respiratory depression when sedated (Br J Anaesth 103: i23, 2009).Exactly how obesity confers increased risk of respiratory depression during sedation remains poorly understood.
