The authors have reported on the impact of the season on pituitary-ovarian axis function in areas with widely varying sunshine durations. Ovarian vitality decreased in winter, luteal phase gonadotropin concentration increased, while the spring follicular phase follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion increased. Decreased ovarian activity is associated with an increased secretion of melatonin, which acts as an anti-gonadotropin in the human body. The commonly used method of serum level determination of gonadotropin is a less than ideal measure that does not fully reflect the type of gonadotropin secretion.
