We have received some letters and raised some questions about the setting of English subjects in secondary schools and their teaching. The general reply is as follows: The Provisional Regulations on Secondary Schools (Draft) stipulate: "One Foreign Languages Division and various schools teach Russian or English depending on the specific conditions. This is because on the one hand, we want to learn from the Soviet Union, learning Russian is very important and necessary; the other hand, there are certain uses of English, which requires some people to learn. As in other languages, English is a tool for people to exchange ideas and understand each other. English is now again a language used in a considerable number of people in the country and academically. Therefore, learning English, both in politics and learning knowledge are necessary. It is also useful for high school students to learn English in order to be able to learn a wider and deeper range of knowledge and work in more areas in the future. After entering the higher education, English also has some usefulness, and some still continue to learn.
