In 1983, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released a report on the health effects of smoking, citing evidence of a relationship between smoking and coronary heart disease (CHD) and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD) Smoking is considered an important cause of CHD in both men and women and is the most important, known and avoidable risk factor for CHD. It is estimated that up to 30% of CHD deaths are caused by smoking and about 30% are deaths caused by smoking. However, in the United States, there are more deaths due to CHD than in the case of cancer (in 1980, the former was 565,000 and the latter 416,000). It is estimated that the number of CHD deaths attributable to smoking is 170,000, higher than the number of cancer deaths associated with smoking (125,000). Smoking and atherosclerosis are also significantly related to the main involvement of the aorta and coronary arteries.
