Objective To explore the distribution of body mass index (BMI) and the relationship between BMI and chronic non-communicable diseases (referred to as chronic disease) in rural community residents so as to provide the basis for early prevention of chronic diseases. Methods The method of census was used to survey 9 988 respondents with a unified questionnaire. All data were entered using Epi Data 3.2 and analyzed using SPSS 13.0 software. Rate comparison using χ2 test, P <0.01 for the difference was statistically significant. Results The detection rates of overweight and obesity among the surveyed subjects were statistically significant (χ2 = 87.265, P <0.001; χ2 = 10.590, P <0.001). The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the 40-59 age group was significantly higher There were no significant differences in the prevalence of overweight and obesity (χ2 = 2.294, P = 0.134; χ2 = 0.003, P = 0.976) in the other two age groups (P <0.001) Diabetes, dyslipidemia and other chronic diseases are closely related to the occurrence, with the increase of BMI, the detection rate of the disease showed an upward trend. Conclusion The detection rates of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia in overweight and obesity groups were significantly higher than those in normal BMI group, suggesting that early prevention of chronic disease should pay special attention to those with BMI≥24.
