The direct conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons may open up a new avenue for the preparation of light oil, one of the important goals pursued by the world’s catalytic research laboratory. Recently, the United States Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory found a new type of catalyst that can convert methane to C2 hydrocarbons at atmospheric pressure and at moderate temperatures. Selectivity is almost 100%. This reaction appears to be a rigorous catalytic reaction with no CO 2 formation, thus eliminating the possibility of gas-phase reactions. Now, at 10% conversion, steam is needed for the conversion. This new catalyst is a mixed oxide system of Ca, Ni, K and needs to be carefully prepared in the preparation of tiny
