The authors reviewed the basic issues of culturing Echinococcus granulosus (sheep) from larvae to sexual maturation in vitro and also described the appropriate steps for transporting, preserving, and sterilizing echinococcosis cysts. The cultured tapeworm larvae were treated with pepsin to remove the sac and repeatedly washed with physiological saline and everted in a solution of sodium taurocholate. Larvae that have everted are cultured in biphasic medium. This medium contained approximately 80% Parker 858 (plus glucose, K + and yeast extract) plus 20% fetal calf serum and was coated on solidified bovine serum at 76 ° C.
