Objective: To investigate the effects of Xuezhikang (XZhK, a Chinese patent medicine used for blood lipid lowering) on the neointimal proliferation and endothelial function after angioplasty of the modelled rabbits Methods: Angioplasty was performed on 30 modelled rabbits of atherosclerotic stenosis in celiac artery After being fed with cholesterol supplemented diet for 8 weeks, they were then randomly divided into the control group, high cholesterol group and XZhK group After an additional high cholesteroldiet for 4 weeks, the local veassels were collected for morphological observation, and blood lipid, nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin 1 (ET 1) were also measured Results: The morphological observation showed that the neointimal area in the XZhK group was less than those in control group ( p <0 05), and that in control group was less than in high cholesterol group ( p <0 05) The serum total cholesterol (TC)、 triglyceride (TG) and ET 1 levels were increased and the serum NO level was decreased after high cholesterol diet However, as compared with the control group and high cholesterol group, there was more remarkable decrease in TC、 TG levels and increase in NO level in XZhK group Conclusion: XZhK had the effects of inhibiting the neointimal proliferation and of protecting the endothelial function after angioplasty in rabbits
