This paper proposes a method for direct evaluation of optimal lime content in expansive soils. 50 sets of overload expansion tests were performed. These samples were treated with different percentages of slaked lime. The same laboratory tests were conducted to determine the maximum Good lime content. The results of the test show that the best amount of lime is 2%. Exceeding this value will have an opposite effect on the expansion characteristics of the treated soil. The lime content reaches 4% and 6%, the expansion rate is twice that of the untreated soil, and when the lime content is 8%, the expansion rate is 1.75 times that of the treated soil. It was found that with the passage of the curing time, especially for samples with a high percentage of lime content, the amount of swelling was reduced. This article introduced a new parameter called lime treatment expansion coefficient to characterize the effect of lime treatment. It was found that volume change and swelling pressure were the minimum when the lime content was 1%, which was far less than the volume change and expansion pressure between 4% and 6% of the lime content usually obtained from consistency index, pH value and unconfined compressive strength test. .
