Objective To investigate the changes of endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the serum of patients with chronic kidney disease. Methods 186 patients with chronic kidney disease in the Department of Nephrology of the Ninth People’s Hospital of Chongqing from January to December 2008 were selected as the experimental group (108 with chronic nephritis, 39 with hypertensive renal disease, 30 with diabetic nephropathy and 9 with lupus renal disease ), Healthy control group of 50 cases. The renal function, endogenous H2S and nitric oxide (NO) levels in each group were measured and compared. The correlation between H2S and blood pressure, NO and serum creatinine was analyzed. Results Serum levels of endogenous H2S in patients with chronic kidney disease were significantly down-regulated compared with the control group (P <0.01). H2S in patients with chronic kidney disease was negatively correlated with blood pressure and serum creatinine. In chronic nephritis, lupus nephropathy, H2S was negatively correlated with NO. Conclusion H2S plays an important role in maintaining the normal physiological function of the kidney, and its down regulation may be related to the progress of chronic kidney disease.
