The International Urban Design Competition under the theme of “Future Industrial City” held in the United States in 1989 was the first international competition recognized by the International Association of Architects. More than 250 programs from 45 countries and regions in the world competed on the same platform, and 22 programs won awards. World renowned urban planners, architects A. Rapoport, A. Jacobson and C. Correa served as judges. The program jointly designed by Gong Zhuangjun, a teacher in the Department of Architecture of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Feng Manjiang, Zhou Ge, Liu Ye, Lu Dan, Shao Guobo and Zhou Feng, 85 students instructed by Sylvia Wallis (American experts) won the honorable mention in this competition. What is published here is a brief introduction by Gong Zejun to their design ideas. From their analysis and prediction of the history-reality-future of Milwaukee and general industrial cities, it can be seen that this success is not accidental.
