夏橙为淡季水果,是甜橙类中最晚熟的品种,供应期长,宜加工制汁,具有丰产优质、适应性广等特点,近百年来成为发展最快的甜橙品种之一。年产500万吨左右,占世界甜橙产量的四分之一,是美国、澳大利亚、摩洛哥、塞浦路斯、巴西和南非等国的主栽品种。 我国于1938年由原四川大学农学院从美国加州引入,继而,不少单位先后多次从美国引进。目前栽培较多的是四川,占全国夏橙总面积的85.35％。 我市始于1965年,由省科学院亚作所和温州市农科所,先后从四川引入少量试种观
