2008年5月10日,国家主席胡锦涛访问日本时,参观了奈良唐招提寺,拜谒了鉴真大师塑像,并向唐招提寺赠送了由扬州漆器厂制作的鉴真东渡船模型“友谊之舟”。一千多年来,鉴真一直是中日友好的象征。鉴真(688—763年)是唐代扬州江阳县(今广陵区湾头镇一带)人,俗姓淳于。他14岁到扬州大云寺为僧;20岁时到洛阳和长安,不仅研究佛典,还学习建筑、美术、医药等知识;26岁时在江淮一带传律授戒,兴建佛寺,医病济贫。
