黔西北高寒山区为贵州山区的最高部分,系乌蒙山、苗岭与娄山所交汇的高地,故高而多山,平均海拔在1500米到2200米之间.包括威宁、赫章、毕节、大方、纳壅等县全部,以及水城、织金、黔西等县之一部分.本区也是贵州省温度最低部分.年均温12.6℃,夏季短,冬季长,个别地方甚至无夏季,每年早在九月下旬已见严霜.年雨量1014毫米,多集中于6—9月.
